Welcome to Santa María del Batey.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of families living in the bateys, or sugar cane plantations, near Hato Mayor, in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. Families in this rural province typically live in old one-room houses without electricity or sanitation; many lack even a latrine. The nearest public school is two kilometers away along the dirt roads that are sometimes impassable and unsafe. So we took on the challenge of building a school for the children in this area.
We broke ground for the new school on October 2, 1999 on a plot of land given by private donors. One year later, on September 4, 2000, the school opened its doors to its first group of students. Every year since, the school has expanded to accommodate more students. In July 2006, the first class of 29 seniors graduated from high school. The school provides a scholarship to the best student in each graduating class to continue his/her education at a university in Santo Domingo.
We invite you to look around our site to learn more about the school and the work of Santa María del Batey. We welcome your inquiries and feedback.
The vast majority of our funds come from private donations. If you are interested in joining our efforts as a donor or volunteer, please let us know. We look forward to hearing from you!
